Monterey County Carmel Art Association Art Sale

At Carmel Art Association, Dolores Street btwn. 5th and 6th, Carmel, (831) 624-4176, www.carmelart.org. The Carmel Art Association artist members will present “Get the Picture”, a show offering their work at reduced prices, through Feb. 5.

 

Carmel Valley Poets

At Carmel Valley Branch Library, 65 W. Carmel Valley Road, Carmel, (831) 659-2377, montereycountyfreelibraries.org. The Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will host Carmel Valley Poets, Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10:15 a.m. Six poets will share poems reflecting their insights about the theme of peace. Seating is first come, first served. Free, public welcome.

 

Works on Paper 1975-2012

At the Monterey Museum of Art La Mirada, 720 Via Mirada, Monterey, (831) 372-3689. Cost: Free-$10. Chuck Close, who is known primarily for his contribution to the history of painting, has also played a role in innovating new methods for printmaking. His current exhibit will be on display through Feb. 17, Wed.-Sat., 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sun., 1-4 p.m.

 

Classic Film Series

At the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Monterey Peninsula, 490 Aguajito Road, Carmel, (831) 624-7404. Requested donation: $5-$10. Alec Guinness, Joan Greenwood and Cecil Parker star in “The Man in the White Suit” (1951) about a scientist who develops a fabric that will never wear out, much to the chagrin of unions and management, Friday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m.

 

Creating a Caring Economics

The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Monterey Peninsula, 490 Aguajito Road, Carmel will present The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics with Dr. Rianne Eisler, Sunday, Feb. 3, 3 p.m. The author’s books will be available. Tickets: $20. Information: (831) 624-7404.

 

‘Dearest Jane’

At the Monterey Public Library, Community Room, 625 Pacific St., Monterey, (831) 646-3949. Ages 16 and older. Free; reservations required. “Dearest Jane,” a one-man show set in 1850, will be performed by writer Howard Burnham as Henry Austen recalling his sister, Jane Austen, Tuesday, Feb. 5 from 7-8:30 p.m. in celebration of the bicentennial of the publication of “Pride and Prejudice.”

 

‘Easy Rider

The Monterey County Film Commission and the Museum of Monterey continue their series, “9 Films Marking 1967,” with “Easy Rider,” Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.

 

First Friday Art Walk

‘The Face of Islam’

At the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Monterey Peninsula, 490 Aguajito Road, Carmel, (831) 624-7404. Requested donation: $5. A photograph exhibition titled, “The Face of Islam,” an intimate look of Muslim people, by Jean Brenner, is on display through Feb. 11.

 

Houston Memorial Sculpture Garden

At the Cherry Center, 6th & Guadalupe, Carmel, (831) 624-7491, www.carlcherrycenter.org. Free. Located within the grounds of the Cherry Center for the Arts, the Geraldine M. and Tom R. Houston Memorial Sculpture Garden offers a changing exhibition of outdoor, contemporary American sculpture. Current exhibit: In Balance, Series #IV.

 

The Literacy Circle

Love Poems and Serenades

Monterey Now: Johnny Apodaca

At the Monterey Museum of Art-La Mirada, 559 Pacific St., Monterey, (831) 372-5477, montereyart.org. Free with paid museum admission. “Monterey Now: Johnny Apodaca,” the first exhibition of new works created by the artist while living in Umbria, Italy, opens Friday, Feb. 1, 5-7 p.m.

 

‘Passion for Place’

The “Passion for Place” features 16 oil paintings from a growing body of work focused on the Carmel River and its watershed by artist Paola Fiorelle Berthoin; on display through Feb. 14.
