The Watsonville Police Department held a press conference Monday to identify the man who was shot and killed Saturday night during a confrontation with police. The department also provided some more details about the incident.
The man was 45-year-old Alejandro Fernandez and was known to police. He was suspected of a series of armed robberies on the levee. When police tried to arrest him, he fired a sawed-off shotgun and hit a policeman as he turned his back to the blast.
The department provided photos of the shotgun, the ammunition Fernandez was carrying and the bullet-proof vest that saved the officer’s life.
