1440 News is a nonprofit news website that is supported by reader donations. We do not run ads or take money from corporations or governments.
This business model might seem strange in today’s media landscape, but it’s actually quite old. In fact, most news organizations used to be supported by reader donations. It wasn’t until the 20th century that advertising became the primary source of revenue for news organizations.
So why did advertising become the dominant source of revenue for news organizations? There are a few reasons…
First, newspapers were extremely popular in the early 20th century. This meant that there was a lot of demand for advertising space in newspapers.
Second, new printing technologies made it possible to print color advertisements, which made them more effective and more expensive.
And finally, as radio and then television began to compete with newspapers for attention, news organizations needed to find a way to generate more revenue to stay afloat. Advertising was the obvious solution.
In recent years, however, the advertising model has begun to break down. Competition from online platforms like Google and Facebook has siphoned away many of the ad dollars that used to support traditional news organizations. At the same time, readers have become increasingly resistant to paying for online content.
This has created a perfect storm for the news industry, and many traditional news organizations are struggling to survive. 1440 News is different because we’re not reliant on advertising or subscriptions for our income. Instead, we rely on the generosity of our readers to keep us going.
The Business Model
1440 News is a digital media company that operates under a subscription-based business model. This means that the company makes money through the subscriptions of its members. The company has two membership tiers: the Basic membership and the Premium membership. The Basic membership gives members access to the company’s website and basic features, while the Premium membership gives members access to the company’s website and all its features.
Like most news organizations, 1440 News relies on advertising to generate revenue. We offer a variety of ad products, including banner ads, video ads, and sponsored content.
Banner ads are the most commonly used form of display advertising. They are typically scrolling images or text that are placed on a website or social media platform. Video ads are becoming increasingly popular, as they are more engaging than static banner ads. Video ads can be played before, during, or after a video is viewed. Sponsored content is a form of native advertising, where an advertiser pays to have their content displayed alongside editorial content. Sponsored content is generally labeled as such to differentiate it from editorial content.
1440 News offers a variety of ad products to meet our partners’ needs. We work with our partners to create custom ad campaigns that achieve their objectives whether it be generating awareness, driving traffic to their website, or increasing sales.
When a company or organization pays for its content to be included in or on a 1440 product, we call that content “sponsored.” Sponsored content is always clearly labeled as such, so that our listeners and readers know when they’re seeing or hearing it.
We believe that our listeners and readers are sophisticated enough to understand that not all the information they get from us is objective. And we believe that they appreciate being able to make up their own minds about what products or services might be right for them, based on all the information we provide – including sponsored content.
That’s why we practice what we call “ editorial independence.” That means that even when a sponsor pays us to produce or place their content, we retain complete control over what goes into that content, and how and where it appears. Our editorial staff makes all the decisions about what sponsored content to include – never our sales staff. And our sponsors have no input into the editorial process.
The bottom line is this: We believe that sponsors should only get their message in front of our audience if it’s good enough to earn its way there through the quality of the content itself. If it isn’t, we won’t put it on the air or online – no matter how much they’re willing to pay.
1440’s weCommerce business model has been quite successful. The company sells a variety of products including digital subscriptions, physical subscription, and one-time purchases.

Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. The industry has four core players: the merchant (also known as ‘retailer’ or ‘brand’), the network (that contains offers for the affiliate to choose from and also takes care of the payments), the publisher (also known as ‘the affiliate’), and the customer. The market has grown in complexity to include a large range of players, including specialized third parties, super-affiliates, and agencies.
