U.S. stock indexes were mostly higher in early trading Monday, nudged up by gains in technology and consumer-focused companies.
The Dow Jones industrial average was on pace to breach 26,000 points for the first time since February, before retreating somewhat. It was still up 122 points, or 0.5 percent, at 25,971 as of 10:10 a.m. Eastern Time.
The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index was up 12 points, or 0.4 percent, at 2,796. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 54 points, or 0.7 percent, to 7,298.
An early gain for banks gave way to losses as bond yields fell and weighing on interest rates and bank profits for the day. Wells Fargo & Co., the biggest U.S. bank by assets, slid 2 percent after reporting that its fourth-quarter profit declined from a year earlier because of one-time charges related to its fake accounts scandal and new taxes enacted by Congress last month.
