Hong Kong Protesters Defy Beijing With New Demands

Demonstrators in Hong Kong are staying on the streets despite a violent crackdown by police over the weekend. On Sunday, protesters marched through central Hong Kong carrying signs that read “No violence, no fear” and “Stand with Hong Kong.”

The protests began more than three months ago in response to a proposed extradition bill that would have allowed China to send suspected criminals to mainland courts for trial. Though the bill was eventually withdrawn, protesters have expanded their demands to include autonomy from Beijing and an investigation into police brutality.

UN Climate Change Report Warns of Dramatic Consequences Unless Emissions Are Cut Immediately

A new report from the United Nations warns that the world is not on track to meet its goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The report says that unless emissions are cut dramatically within the next decade, the world will face catastrophic consequences from climate change, including rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and mass displacement of people.

The UN says that nations need to take “unprecedented” action to meet its goals, including transitioning to renewable energy sources, investing in carbon-neutral technologies, and changing consumption patterns. The report comes just weeks before world leaders are set to gather for a major climate summit in Madrid.

Financial news

Wall Street stocks fell sharply on Tuesday after new data showed a surge in US inflation, stoking fears that interest rates will rise sooner than expected.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 400 points, or 1.4%, to close at 34,137.31.

The S&P 500 slid 1.3% to 4,163.42, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 1% to 13,470.30.

It was the Dow’s biggest one-day percentage drop since February 24 and the S&P 500’s biggest fall since March 12.

The retreat came as data showed US consumer prices rose 4.2% in April from a year earlier, the biggest annual increase since 2008. Excluding food and energy costs, so-called core inflation rose 3%.

Investors are worried that rising inflation could force the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates sooner than expected, which would be bad news for stocks. The Fed has said it plans to keep rates near zero until 2023 at the earliest.

“Today’s inflation data put a scare into the market,” Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research wrote in a note to clients. “The stock market is still pricing in an interest rate cut by 2023.”
